“Pull Yourself to the Bar”

When an athlete performs a Clean, they’re pulling the bar from the floor to their shoulders. When we say the bar ‘crashes’ in a Clean, we’re referring to a technical fault that occurs when the bar travels significantly above the shoulders before arriving at the shoulders. This can cause the athlete to lose posture and make completing the lift more difficult, or result in a miss.

Some may think of the Clean as pulling the bar up, and then dropping or diving under the bar to receive it. This can result in the bar being pulled up, traveling ABOVE the shoulders significantly, before coming down from a significant height and jolting the athlete’s body.

It may help to think of the Clean as pulling the bar up, and then pulling one’s self TO the bar. This can result in the bar being pulled up and traveling only slightly above the shoulders, before then being fixed on the athlete’s shoulders. Pulling on the bar (rather than diving) when going under can also help an athlete maintain awareness of where the bar is in space, and enabling them to properly tense their torso and time the rest of the lift.

There are different ways to address the bar crashing in the Clean, but this simple concept may help. Pull the bar up, then pull yourself to the bar!

Pound for pound (or in Europe, do they say kilo for kilo?) Omed was the best lifter at Nordics.

Going in line with our recent posts about bar crashing, look at how the bar goes almost directly to his shoulders as he pulls under (there’s no wasted height on this phase of the lift)

Had the pleasure of lifting with him earlier this year while he was dabbling more with CrossFit; it’s great to see he’s focusing more on Weightlifting again.

Would anyone be interested in seeing more footage from Nordics (or the other competitions/training camps I’ve happened to be at the last year?)
